Our word of the week, not surprisingly, means "gem"- as in jewel. But more appropriately for the season, it means "bud"- those precious little things that are now burgeoning. In fact I can see them now right outside my window.
Who knows if the fleeting, live bud or the enduring, hard gem is more precious? I love them both.
"Gemma" is also a feminine personal name in Italy, although not so common nowadays.
