Word of the week- ghiacciolo

A word that is specific to both this place and time- ghiacciolo (ghee-ahch-CHO-loh), icicle. The word comes from ghiaccio, ice. I've been observing the beautiful, diamond-like icicles outside my windows all week, as they glimmer and take on varying degrees of transparency. This evening they made for a superb view from my bedroom, reflecting the light, framing the deepening blue sky and rising moon, and the pristine snow from the nearby roofs.

Oddly enough (to us, not the Italians), the word also has a summery meaning: popsicle. Below, the Prez enjoys un ghiacciolo al te' verde in Japan.
