The new Venice (actually Mestre) bypass

For those of you who drive in Italy, you brave souls, I am happy to announce that the Italians have just whipped out a bypass around Venice in the direction of Padua. It is a 32.5-kilometer (>20-mile) length of autostrada A-4 from the Venezia Est exit near Quarto d'Altino to the Venezia Ovest exit near Dolo. Below, the bypass is shown in blue.

Update, August 2, 2009. This week-end has been the first real trial of the new bypass, what with the Italians indulging in their yearly lemming-like rush to the sea, all at the same time. Alas, disaster struck. Massive failure, with lines of over 20 miles (about 30 kilometers). Sigh.
