Italian Amazon is here!

As announced last week, Amazon has arrived in Italy. Today is its first day, and according to the Corriere della Sera, the first purchase was made thirty-nine minutes after midnight by someone (probably a guy) who bought a Canon printer. That was fast.

The Italian version of the online retailer features not only books and movies/TV/music, but also electronics, software, hardware, videogames, toys, small appliances and watches. So far, no food or clothing or the other things we (outside Italy) would like to see. This was perhaps part of a deal to protect traditional Italian retailers. Hefty discounts of 30% are being offered for the launch.

A flat rate of 10 euros/per year is offered to customers in Italy for unlimited shipping. International shipping is also available e.g. to the US at 14 euros for 10-15 days arrival time.
